What lies beneath the struggle with food, weight and body control? In this episode I explore some of the deeper issues that were at the heart of my own experience of anorexia and other eating disorders—the feeling of not being good enough, the drive to be perfect, the fear of failure and the search for acceptance, love, belonging, value, safety and security.
I share something of my own journey into anorexia and the difficult period after hospital, when my attempt to be perfect had failed and the same underlying beliefs became entangled with hunger, anger, bingeing and self-punishment.
I also explore why I believe eating disorders affect the whole person—physical, emotional, social, relational and spiritual—and therefore need a whole-person approach to recovery. For me, discovering truth that challenged the lies, and experiencing a love and security deeper than words or intellectual understanding, became a foundational part of healing.
There is a spiritual dimension to this episode, grounded in my own Christian experience, but I offer it openly: take what is helpful and consider how it may fit within your own framework.
